Aims

The Centre for Vision Research, through collaborative research, aims to:

  • Describe the pattern and causes of eye disease leading to vision loss in Australians, in both older and younger age groups.
  • Identify risk factors for individual eye diseases and vision loss, particularly modifiable factors that could prevent eye disease.
  • Promote better eye health for Australians through screening for eye disease in groups at risk and by striving to reduce modifiable risk factors.
  • Investigate strategies to reduce the various impacts of vision loss on dependency and other conditions, like falls and fractures.
  • Examine links between vision loss and systemic conditions and their treatments, particularly diabetes, vascular problems like stroke and age-related cognitive decline.
  • Describe the pattern, causes, risk factors and impacts of hearing loss in older Australians and investigate links with vision loss.
  • Educate the public and health professionals about eye disease and vision loss.
  • Work with other partners to achieve aims of the VISION2020 Australia program.
  • Collaborate with other groups performing allied work both in Australia and internationally.
  • Translate research findings into clinical practice.
