Retinal Vascular Signs

Using data from the Blue Mountains Eye Study (BMES), this study aims to evaluate the 5- and 10-year incidence and progression of retinal microvascular signs and their relation to incident cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease (CVD and ) and other systemic health outcomes. The BMES has retinal images available from more than 95% of study participants at baseline and at 5- and 10-year follow up visits.

Two types of retinal signs are evaluated: qualitative presence of specific focal signs (focal retinal arteriolar narrowing, arteriovenous nicking, arteriolar wall opacity and the presence of retinopathy lesions); and quantitative measures of generalised retinal vessel calibre (narrowing) using computer-assisted methods.

Relations between these signs and cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease and other outcomes will be assessed. Findings could provide key information regarding the contribution of microvascular disease to the pathophysiology and natural history of vascular disease. Our data could also support the potential value of retinal photography for cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease risk prediction and stratification.
